History & Geography


At Cloudside we want all children to know what it means to be an historian – immersed in and inspired by history – with transferable skills and a sound progression of knowledge understanding of key concepts.

Children will gain knowledge and understanding of history though the key concepts.

At Cloudside academy, we recognise that pupils have a wide range of experiences both academically, socially and emotionally. The community we serve is a mixed one with some disadvantaged families and other families who have access to a vast range of experiences. There also many families who are in between these two extremes. We have designed our curriculum to enable every child to have the same experiences and to bridge the gap academically, socially and emotionally between the disadvantaged children (and their families) and the more advantaged children and families.


Specifically to Geography, we want to foster a love of the Geography discipline in children. We want children to have an understanding that Geography is a truly broad topic which encompasses lots of other subjects and is all around us. We want the children to be confident in using a range of maps confidently for different purposes, we want children to be able to use a wide range of field work skills such as sketching, measuring and observing to help develop an understanding of the world around them. Beyond a knowledge of maps we want to develop children’s naturally enquiring minds, we want them to be able to delve into Geography and ask enquiry questions such as ‘Why would people not live in deserts?’ or ‘Why wouldn’t it be a good idea to build a theme park in Antartica?’. We believe that by having an ability to ask questions like this, children will be able to develop an enquiring mind and will be able to gather relevant information to them by asking questions about their surroundings.

Our aspiration for our children is that they develop an understanding of themselves and their place in the world, how to care for themselves, their families and the wider environment. We want them to be ‘thinkers’, people who are reflective and able to make reasoned decisions based on clear principles, to be ‘true to themselves’. We want our children to understand themselves within a global community and to make links with other children within their own city, their country and internationally. We want children to accept everyone, no matter where they are from or what religion they follow. We want Geography to help support this acceptance within our community. We aim to develop children who learn skills for life, become good decision makers, develop an emotional intelligence and are able to deal with difficulties as they arise both now and in the future.
