Design and Technology makes a unique contribution to the development of the child and develops within them, valuable transferable skills for life.
At Cloudside Academy, we have a vision for Design and Technology that is underpinned by our students gaining a real life context for learning. The Design and Technology curriculum will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to use their initiative, be organised and communicate effectively. The children are inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of innovative designs that include structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products, all with a real life purpose.
Design and Technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We envision our children to be engaged in a thought process which allows them to understand the importance of design in their everyday lives and the curiosity to understand how the objects around them, why they were invented and how they can be improved further.
A clear knowledge of the Design and Technology concepts e.g. designing, making, evaluating and technical knowledge will be evident through the curriculum. Children will be able to place key topics with the key concepts of Design and Technology, and this will be heavily underpinned by the importance of our children applying the correct technological vocabulary in the daily context. It will give the children opportunity to develop vital skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products, while asking technical questions.
We want our children to become the next generation of Design and Technology role models, aspiring to have careers as engineers, designers, chefs and architects, to name a few. Overall, our curriculum gives children the opportunity to be inspired fall in love with Design and Technology and evidence this in their everyday learning, sharing their passions with the next generation of their families.
Every year, every child will become a chef and design and create their own recipe. Here at Cloudside we have a kitchen that is dedicated to the children learning the key life skill of food hygiene and cooking. The children wear their chef hats an apron, prepare food and learn technical skills to cook safely. The children love this and we think the family does too!
